Join Public Knowledge for a screening of the Sundance Award-winning film, Middle of Nowhere, directed by Ana Duvernay, and a conversation about the detrimental effects of prison phone rates.
Screening will be accompanied with opening remarks by Representatives Henry Waxman and Bobby Rush, followed by a short question and answer session with Public Knowledge and Participant Media.
Middle of Nowhere tells the story of a Ruby, a woman separated from her husband for five years due to his incarceration. This film explores the mental, emotional, and financial difficulties experienced by those with incarcerated loved ones. The film is also an opportunity to discuss the high cost of interstate phone rates that families of inmates within state prisons are subjected to, many times as much as $25 for 15 minutes.
Participant Media, producers of Middle of Nowhere, have partnered with a coalition of media reform, grassroots, criminal justice, civil rights and telecommunication policy advocacy groups, including Public Knowledge to campaign for prison phone rate reform. Member organizations have joined together to urge the FCC to pass the Wright Petition, essentially capping what private companies can charge families and loved ones of prisoners for phone calls. Please join us in supporting the film, and signing a petition to the FCC asking that they help lower the cost of phone calls to prisoners.
