Public Knowledge Cheers Bipartisan Letter on Proposed Universal Music Group-EMI Group Merger

Today, Senate Antitrust Subcommittee Chair Sen. Herb Kohl (D-WI) and Ranking Member Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) sent a letter to the Federal Trade Commission saying that the merger of Universal Music Group (UMG) and EMI Group “presents significant competition issues that merit careful FTC review to ensure that the transaction is not likely to cause substantial harm to competition….”

The following can be attributed to Gigi B. Sohn, President & CEO of Public Knowledge:

“When the leading Democrat and Republican on the Senate Judiciary Antitrust Subcommittee join together to tell the FTC to closely scrutinize this merger’s impact on the music business and its fans, the Commission needs to take notice. Bipartisan letters like this are extremely rare in our political environment, which makes its warnings that this merger raises serious competitive concerns all the more powerful.

As I said when I testified before the Antitrust Subcommittee in June, this combination would allow one “super-major” label to determine the fate of new music services that are vital to a vibrant and diverse music business that benefits artists and their fans. UMG has a long history of hostility to these new services and there is no reason to believe that an even bigger UMG-EMI will be any less so.”
