Public Knowledge Commends FCC On Data Roaming Order

Most recent activity:

The Federal Communications Commission this morning approved an order requiring wireless carriers to offer data roaming to other wireless carriers on “commercially reasonable” terms.

The following statement is attributed to Harold Feld, legal director of Public Knowledge:

“The Commission acted wisely this morning to give consumers the ability to have their smartphones work seamlessly as they move around the country.  This order gives sufficient flexibility to carriers to work out agreements to make this possible, while promoting competition.

“The requirement of ‘commercially reasonable terms’ and other features will give carriers the ability to work out agreements for their particular circumstances without entering into common carrier regulation.  The requirements in this order mirror those the Commission has used in other circumstances to promote competition through market forces rather than through rate regulation.”
