First things first: huzzah.  Today Senator Reid announced today that he is postponing the Tuesday vote on the Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA).  Moments later, Representative Lamar Smith shelved the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). This is a fantastic day for the internet, and the internet community at large.  As we have mentioned before, this was not some “Hollywood vs. Silicon Valley” industry-on-industry regulatory fight.  This has been a fight between a set of narrow interests and everyone else.  Today all of your work paid off and the House and Senate finally realized that the process is fatally flawed.

Yesterday was absolutely one of those days that reminds me why I stay in public advocacy. I’m a democracy junkie. Yes, I admit it. The sight of literally millions of people remembering that they are citizens and not just consumers gets me juiced.

The good news is that by every possible metric, SOPAStrike was an enormous success. We absolutely shocked the poop out of members of Congress and broke through the infamous “Washington bubble” that separates our elected officials from what is actually going on in the real world. As a result, we forced more than 20 Senators to come out publicly against PIPA/SOPA, including a number of co-sponsors withdrawing support. Fantastic!

The Web blackout protests are the clearest evidence yet that the movie lobby and its preeminent tweeter, Rupert Murdoch, have it all wrong. They don't know who their enemy is. They don't even know which battle they are supposed to be fighting. All of that makes for a messy confrontation.

The story line ginned up in coverage of the Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA) and Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) is that the dispute is between Silicon Valley and Hollywood. Or, if you read the entertainment publications, it's between Hollywood and Silicon Valley.  No, the fight is broader.  It's between Hollywood and America.

The statement agreed with the petition signers that anti-piracy laws must not increase censorship or risk security flaws by tampering with the domain name system (DNS), key parts of both SOPA and the Senate's proposed PROTECT IP Act (PIPA). This is a fantastic sign that shows that the objections of ordinary, clued-in Internet users can make a difference in stopping misguided legislation.

The statement, co-authored by Victoria Espinel, the IP Enforcement Coordinator, Aneesh Chopra, the Chief Technology Officer, and Howard Schmidt, the Cybersecurity Coordinator, affirms the message that legislation tampering with the DNS poses real risks to the security and stability of the Internet.
