Greetings, all! My name is Matthew McHale, and I'm the first of Public Knowledge's interns to arrive for the summer.

I'm a second year law student at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. I was “out of school” for a few years before going to law school – that's in quotes because I've been in one graduate program or another for most of that time, though I also worked as an R&D engineer and web developer. I studied computer science as an undergrad, and mostly math (abstract algebra) and business in grad school.

I grew up in Dayton, Ohio, but I've traveled pretty extensively and lived in a variety of places, both domestically and abroad. I love reading: I have a weak spot for well-written fiction and graphic novels, but I'll read pretty much anything. I've been playing piano for most of my life, and I dabble in other instruments from time to time. I love games of all kinds, ranging from board games to computer/console games and including typical geek fare such as role-playing games and Magic: The Gathering.

Legally speaking, my interests run toward copyright reform, free speech, and privacy, particularly in the context of computers and other emerging technologies. My first few days here at PK have been great, and I'm looking forward to the rest of the summer!
