Today, the Federal Communications Commission released further notice of proposed rulemaking on inmate calling services.

The FCC is now seeking comments on phone access fees and flat rate proposals, including the possibility of preferred rate caps, in order to increase fee transparency for consumers contacting incarcerated loved ones.

Public Knowledge applauds Chairman Tom Wheeler and Commissioner Mignon Clyburn for moving in the right direction by seeking to reform these phone rates. We encourage the FCC to continue its progress by examining the impact of “kick backs” and outrageous fees preventing prisoners from communicating with their families.

The following can be attributed to Clarissa Ramon, Government Affairs and Outreach Associate at Public Knowledge:

“Public Knowledge appreciates the ongoing efforts of Commissioner Mignon Clyburn and her staff for continuing to champions this issue. The families of prisoners deserve relief from high fees and phone costs that result from the commission system in many states. We believe this is a step in the right direction for families of incarcerated individuals.”
