Today, the Federal Communications Commission released further notice of proposed rulemaking on inmate calling services.
The FCC is now seeking comments on phone access fees and flat rate proposals, including the possibility of preferred rate caps, in order to increase fee transparency for consumers contacting incarcerated loved ones.
Public Knowledge applauds Chairman Tom Wheeler and Commissioner Mignon Clyburn for moving in the right direction by seeking to reform these phone rates. We encourage the FCC to continue its progress by examining the impact of “kick backs” and outrageous fees preventing prisoners from communicating with their families.
