In a press call at 12:00pm EST this Thursday, consumer advocates and public interest organizations from across the country will explain how the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) proposed rule on broadband privacy would protect consumers and their families from aggressive data collection practices conducted by Internet Service Providers.

ISPs have a unique window into our lives and, as we spend an increasing amount of time online, they are collecting and monetizing more and more of our data including when we use mobile apps and visit websites. They are also increasingly tracking consumers when they are on the go—such as in stores, at school, or driving.

The FCC’s proposal rule would give consumers important new controls over how ISPs use and share their personal information. But opposition from the largest cable and phone companies, along with supporters from the ad and commercial data industry, are working to prevent the proposal from being approved by the FCC.  The FCC is expected to vote on the consumer privacy plan on October 27.

On the call, representatives from Public Knowledge, Consumer Federation of America, Color of Change, and Georgetown University’s Institute for Public Representation will join consumer privacy champion Senator Markey to discuss why the FCC must act to protect consumers from the growing threat they face online.
