Today, President Obama issued an Executive Order on global entrepreneurship, detailing the administration’s goals “designed to connect American and foreign entrepreneurs with the Federal Government and promote entrepreneurship across the United States and around the world.” The Executive Order also establishes that the Global Connect Initiative will focus on encouraging foreign countries to prioritize internet connectivity and digital literacy programs in developing nations.

The following can be attributed to Gene Kimmelman, President and CEO of Public Knowledge:

“We are very pleased by the ongoing effort to promote affordable broadband internet access around the globe. We welcome the President’s Executive Order to ensure a coordinated and consistent approach to achieve the goals of the Global Connect Initiative and bring 1.5 billion people online by 2020. We look forward to working with the White House and other stakeholders to ensure the necessary protections are in place to guard against unreasonable discrimination, misuse of consumer data, and human rights violations.”
