Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Daniel Inouye (D-HI) earlier today introduced the Broadband Data Improvement Act, with cosponsors Senators John Kerry (D-MA), Byron Dorgan (D-ND), Maria Cantwell (D-WA), Mark Pryor (D-AK), and Amy Klobuchar (D-MN). The bill would, among other provisions, require the FCC to collect data annually on the deployment of high-speed broadband services.

The following statement is attributed to Gigi B. Sohn, president and co-founder of Public Knowledge:

“We are very glad to see Chairman Inouye and his colleagues introduce this legislation. Representatives of the telecommunications industry, lawmakers and consumer groups all agree that the Federal Communications Commission must improve its collection of data on broadband deployment if we are to have an effective telecommunications policy.

“We are particularly pleased to see that the bill requires annual surveys by the FCC on zip code-plus-4 basis, which will help immeasurably in determining which areas of the country will be favored with advanced services and which will not. We look forward to working with the Committee on this vital issue.”

The text of the bill is available here.
