Today Public Knowledge filed reply comments at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on the subject of net neutrality. Public Knowledge’s filing explains how a careful analysis of initial comments filed in this proceeding supports Public Knowledge’s position that the Commission should reclassify the internet as a Title II telecommunications service in order to protect the open internet.

The following can be attributed to Laura Moy, staff attorney at Public Knowledge:

“The open internet docket has received an unprecedented number of comments from concerned members of the American public. And one thing we have learned from those comments is that the public considers internet openness to be tied to fundamental American values of fairness, opportunity, the American Dream, and preserving free expression.

“We need strong open internet rules that prohibit paid prioritization and discrimination of content by ISPs. This would preserve the qualities about the internet that Americans hold dear. It is also the only way to adequately protect Americans’ online privacy and foster innovation in new privacy-protecting technologies. But to pass the strong rules we need, the Commission must reclassify the internet as a Title II telecommunications service.

“The Commission has tried to come up with a net neutrality solution that does not require reclassification. But more than one million comments later, it is crystal clear that the proposed solution falls short. The Commission must reclassify the internet as a Title II service and pass robust net neutrality rules.”
