Public Knowledge President to Testify Before House Judiciary Committee on Regulating Digital Platforms

June 10, 2019 , , ,

Public Knowledge President Gene Kimmelman will testify before the U.S. House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Antitrust, Commercial and Administrative Law this Tuesday, June 11 at 2:00 p.m. His testimony in the hearing on “Open Platforms and Market Power, Part 1: The Free and Diverse Press” will argue that it’s time to pair antitrust law with the right regulatory framework to promote competition among digital platforms.

The following may be attributed to Public Knowledge President Gene Kimmelman:

“We praise the committee for this investigation because there are legitimate concerns about bottleneck power developing among the largest digital platforms that make it difficult for competition and innovation to grow across all segments of the digital marketplace. We urge the committee to carefully examine any impediments to competition and begin considering which policy tools are best to enhance competition and innovation.

“We believe it is now time to promote both strong antitrust enforcement but also develop a pro-competition regulatory framework including data portability, interoperability, and nondiscrimination for the dominant players with bottleneck power in the digital marketplace.”
