Today, the Copyright Office announced the appointments by the Librarian of Congress of David Carson, Monica P. McCabe, and Brad Newberg as the first copyright claims officers on the newly established Copyright Claims Board (CCB).

The following can be attributed to John Bergmayer, Legal Director at Public Knowledge:

“While we continue to have doubts about the CASE Act, they could have been addressed in part if the first officers selected to the Copyright Claims Board gave us confidence that the process will be fair to defendants who are representing themselves. Unfortunately, this selection does not give us that confidence. With respect to the well-qualified attorneys, some of whom have significant experience representing copyright defendants, we had hoped to see a more diverse section representative of the creators who may find themselves defendants as well as plaintiffs before this tribunal.”
