House Energy and Commerce Should Not Support the Walden Incubator Program

Tomorrow, the House Energy and Commerce Communications and Technology Subcommittee will mark up a series of bills, which may include “The Broadcast Diversity in Leadership Act” as introduced by Greg Walden (R-OR) last week. The bill would create a “Broadcast Incubator Program,” led by the Federal Communications Commission, to enable broadcasters to form partnerships with new market entrants. Public Knowledge contends that passing this bill would actually make it more difficult to achieve media diversity by sidestepping what “diversity” means — particularly for members of Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC), not to mention women — while further entrenching the lack of diverse voices in media.

Public Knowledge Applauds House for Passing TV Viewer Protection Act

Today, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to prevent consumers from experiencing blackouts, runaway price increases for video content, and unexpected bills by passing the “TV Viewer Protection Act of 2019” (H.R. 5035). The bill reauthorizes provisions of the Satellite Television Extension and Localism Act Reauthorization (STELAR) Act.

Public Knowledge Responds to Sinclair Broadcast Group’s Plan to Acquire Tribune Media

Today, Sinclair Broadcast Group announced that it has entered into an agreement to acquire Tribune Media for an estimated $3.9 billion. Among other things, Sinclair and Tribune are both large broadcast companies that control TV stations in many local markets.
